Prospective students

We welcome enthusiastic students who wish to pursue PhD degree worldwide. For those who consider applying to TMU (and joining NLP group), please contact Mamoru Komachi <> well before application deadline. We strongly encourage women, ethnic minorities, people with disabilities.

ATTENTION: Please note that you need to be fluent in Japanese to enroll in master's program (almost all the master's courses are taught in Japanese). The official start date of TMU is April. You cannot enroll master's program starting from October, unless you apply for the TMU scholarship for Asian countries. Also, I will not take international students who do not plan to pursue PhD degree at this moment.

If you are interested in applying for master's program at TMU, you must be fluent in Japanese (JLPT N1 or equivalent is necessary because all the classes are taught in the Japanese language). If you are interested in applying for Ph.D. program at TMU, Japanese proficiency is not required (although it would help your stay in Japan).

If you are going to apply for the MEXT scholarship, we offer a letter of acceptance. Please feel free to contact Mamoru Komachi if you need one. If you are interested in the TMU scholarship for Asian countries, please feel free to contact me (I will ask your supervisor for a reference). It is not common in Japan to offer salaries to PhD students, so unless you are OK with privately-financed, it is your responsibility to obtain some scholarship. (We do offer research assistantship and tuition fee expemption, but these altogether do not cover living expense in Japan. University dorms are higly competitive, and if you are not in university dorms it will cost ca. 100,000 JPY/mo if you stay in Tokyo.)

We accept research students who come directly to Japan (However, I require JLPT N1 for research students, because there is little opportunity for you to improve your Japanese skills if you do not have JLPT N1 or equivalent). Application deadline is June for October semester and February for April semester. If you are already in Japan (e.g. as a student for a language school), please take the entrance exam directly.
